SYFY.com sold for $250K

12/07/09 5:01 PM

We now know that NBC paid a whopping $250,000 for SYFY.com. Full story available on The Domains.

As much as you all know I’m a fan of pronounceable LLLL.coms, I can’t see the logic in replacing SciFi.com (a domain NBC already owned) with SYFY.com. I know some people will use this as justification for why they should quote their domains at 100 times what a domainer would pay… Do keep in mind that we only hear the success stories — I haven’t come across many domainers happy to tell the world how they blew a potential sale by asking far too much. This sale was quite different from Rick’s sale of iReport.com in that CNN had already began iReport before acquiring the domain, whereas NBC didn’t give any hint that they would be interested in the domain SYFY.com and were smart enough to approach the seller without even making it known that NBC was the buyer. Pure chance that it worked out for the seller — I’m happy it did and hope he won’t beat himself up too much about “only getting $250,000″ for it.

Brilliant sale, and well done to the seller for getting such a nice amount for it. It could easily have been sold for much less had the buyer thought it was a ’small-time’ end user etc.

This just makes no sense at all. I am trying to understand it but I can’t seem to grasp it. The only thing that I can come up with is that it is some type of nepitism or money laundering.

    Situation:

Person A sees NBC Chairman of the Board cheating on his wife.
Person A says give me $250,000 and I will be quiet.
Chairman of the Board says “I can’t do that, the company will wonder where the money has gone.
Person A says, just “buy” this domain from m for the price that i am asking then.

Anyone else have any idea how to justify this complete waste of money in such a crappy economy?

A conspiracy theory, I like it Troy :P Although I just think that this is a very bad bit of marketing by an over-paid marketing department.

It’s like going from “Business.com” to “iBisnez.com” since it’s more “hip” lol - when in fact it’s a step backwards :P

    Troy,

I’ve long wondered whether some of those sales reported on DN Journal over the years were exactly what you said — “favors” for friends or money laundering. Some of them have sold for far more than a domainer would pay, only to be parked with Sedo — makes no sense to me.

  5. Troy Says:

It seems crazy but I can find no other explanation for the purchases (in this case)=)

  6. Richard Boris Says:

SYFY.com was a developed and popular website that had reported revenue of $40,000 and originally developed 10 years ago. IDIOTS! http://www.airlockalpha.com/node/6502

  7. Dotwtf.com Says:

The theory is here is way off, if you read the story the seller is pissed and basically said NBC had no “Balls” NO nepotism here IMO more like a disgruntled seller. Click the link on the domains.com and read the sellers story he is not happy at all.

@ Richard: Thanks for the link. The guy’s assumptions in that article are equally as ridiculous as the one’s I read on The Domains.
    @ Ray: Thanks :)

Glad I don’t know the guy in real life.. Comes off as a real prick — badmouthing NBC after they paid him 250k… Does he think they’re going to pay him more by him doing that? All he does is come off as one big crybaby. What on Earth makes him think NBC did anything wrong? Was he not going to do the same thing as NBC himself — game the other party to get the best deal possible? NBC played their cards 100% right and this crybaby would have likely ended up with nothing due to his own greed had they introduced themselves as NBC. He should be thanking them for saving him from his own stupidity. Apparently he’s a print journalist — I would think $250k would do someone in that field a world of good, especially considering the fact it’s probably a coin toss whether he’ll have a job in 5 years time with the way things are headed…

Richard’s link really makes me dislike this guy. I mean, who held a gun to this guy and forced him to take the 250 grand? Is he pissed because he wasn’t made vice-president of the network as part of the bargain??

Nice coincidence this post came in after the journalists are scum post. Ya think?

  10. Reece Says:

    Bill,

Yes - the timing couldn’t be more perfect :)

    Guys

You need to check out the comments today the “seller” posted.

    http://www.thedomains.com/2009/07/12/now-we-know-the-price-nbc-paid-for-syfycom-250k-the-story-behind-it/

He is now saying he did not sell syfy.com, just “created” the term and actually sold syfyportal.com and an unregistered trademark for $250K

  12. Reece Says:

    Thank you Mike :)

  13. Reece Says:

Mike has provided further clarification on the issue: http://www.thedomains.com/2009/07/13/correction-clarification-on-syfycom-it-did-not-sell-for-250k/ . I’m a bit confused on what exactly has been / has not been sold here. I’ll have to read over the posts again when I have more time.
