Domain Name Broker Wanted

15/05/09 4:39 AM

No, not me! Just time for a rant about how many people I’ve seen desperately looking for domain name brokers lately… The sad fact is that if you’ve approached all the big players and none of them are interested in brokering your domains, it’s probably not because they don’t like you — they just don’t like your domains. Don’t take it personally, I know it’s hard to consider the fact that all those domains you painstakingly bought or registered just aren’t worth a domain name broker’s time — those domains which you thought were screaming end user were actually screaming “delete me or whatever you do, sure as hell don’t renew me!”

Okay, I’m sorry if I offended anyone with that but seriously, if nobody wants to broker your domains, have you ever thought of asking yourself why that may be? If you went to any broker (and probably even most domainers) with a domain that could quite literally sell itself, whose going to turn down free money? So you have a domain that can sell itself but you want to get someone who can get top dollar for it — okay, that makes sense now.

Some of the people looking for brokers on the domain forums are looking for domain name brokers to find end users for their new domain name registrations… There’s plenty of stories of domainers buying a domain for $10 and reselling it for $250 or $500 — do you have any idea what kind of chump change that leaves a domain name broker working on a 10% commission? Let’s do some math… Ten percent of $250 is $25. Someone explain to me why anyone would broker a $10 brand new domain name registration, work their ass off in the process of finding an end user for it, and then settle for $25 on that $250 sale. You better be giving that guy $240 of that $250 sale, seeing as you’d be lucky to even see your domain’s registration fee back were it not for him brokering that sale.

Agree totally Reece, I have not been following these posts that ask for people to broker their worthless domain names for them, but the thought of it makes me laugh and I feel sorry for anyone who would fall for the scam of enslaving themself to brokering a dud domain name for someone

I remember seeing last year someone putting up a forum post saying head hunters wanted, they wanted someone to find valuable domain for them at cheap prices and they would give the person a low fee for finding the domain name for them

  2. Reece Says:

Josh, I think the idea of headhunters is even funnier than what I blogged about ! I can just imagine “Hey Reece, if you can find me an LLL.com for $1000, I’ll give you $500″… Hmm, why don’t I just buy the domain myself and keep the whole profit for myself?

Mind you, maybe if you got those headhunters outsourced it could actually work.. :)

I think some people are so excited at having the opportunity to broker a domain they completely throw logic out the window. Even if it’s a good domain, say an LLL.com — you’re going to have a bloody hard time selling it if the owner wants $100,000 minimum for it. Some of these wannabe domain name brokers think about the commission that’s in it for them if they get the domain(s) sold, not realizing how difficult it may very well be to do just that.

Sounds good Reece I will develop a site called getafreeheadhuntcer, it can be opportunist to head hunter central

  4. Josh raredn Says:

Reece, I just noticed you added more : ) Your quote someone once their random lll.com brokered for “$100,000 minimum for it”

yes the excitment factor is dangerous and if people are not thinking can this domain name be sold for this price, they can get caught, the same way people get caught with other get rich scams

I think of eBay as the broker of worthless domains!

This is not 100% true as there is the occasional domain worth something. But it is 99.5% true.

eBay gets their fee (listing) up front however — and is automated…. so they come out okay even with the questionable domains listed/brokered there.

  6. Reece Says:

Yeah eBay is pretty crazy that way — amazing to see a $6 LLLL.com sometimes hit $30 over there. You just never know what to expect. I have VWYV.com over there right now with bidding at $6.99 and 5 people watching it — would love to see a bidding war near the end :)
